Jebel Ali already has an expo site, a port and an aluminium smelter. Soon, however, its skyline of gantry cranes, cooling towers and flaring stacks will be joined by rollercoasters.
Dubai’s Meraas Leisure and Entertainment has struck a deal to launch a Six Flags-branded theme park in Dubai, the latest in a series of partnership deals for its 30 million-square-foot leisure complex in the predominantly industrial area.
Texas-based Six Flags Entertainment, which operates 18 amusement parks across the United States, Canada and Mexico, has struck a strategic partnership with Meraas to open its first branded theme park outside North America.
The park is expected to open to customers in late 2017, according to Six Flags.
“We are delighted to have a world-leading theme park company and a brand like Six Flags on board,” said Raed Al Nuaimi, the chief leisure and entertainment officer for Meraas. “We are confident their presence will perfectly complement our project and further enhance our overall offerings in the leisure and entertainment space.”
Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.
“The cornerstone of our international expansion strategy has always been finding the right partner in the right location and, with Meraas in Dubai, we have done exactly that,” said Jim Reid-Anderson, the chief executive of Six Flags.
The park will be one of five theme parks to be located across Meraas’s complex in Jebel Ali, announced in November 2012 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Initial plans for the scheme included a Bollywood theme park, a water and marine life park, and a children’s theme park.
It was announced last year that Meraas had also entered into an agreement with the UK’s Merlin Entertainment to open a Legoland theme park in Jebel Ali by 2016.
Meraas did not respond to requests for comment on whether construction on the leisure complex had begun yet, nor on when the first facilities were likely to be opened to the public.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Find the right policy for you
Don’t wait until the week you fly to sign up for insurance – get it when you book your trip. Insurance covers you for cancellation and anything else that can go wrong before you leave.
Some insurers, such as World Nomads, allow you to book once you are travelling – but, as Mr Mohammed found out, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.
Check your credit card before booking insurance to see if you have any travel insurance as a benefit – most UAE banks, such as Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, have cards that throw in insurance as part of their package. But read the fine print – they may only cover emergencies while you’re travelling, not cancellation before a trip.
Pre-existing medical conditions such as a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy and even asthma may not be included as standard. Again, check the terms, exclusions and limitations of any insurance carefully.
If you want trip cancellation or curtailment, baggage loss or delay covered, you may need a higher-grade plan, says Ambareen Musa of Souqalmal.com. Decide how much coverage you need for emergency medical expenses or personal liability. Premium insurance packages give up to $1 million (Dh3.7m) in each category, Ms Musa adds.
Don’t wait for days to call your insurer if you need to make a claim. You may be required to notify them within 72 hours. Gather together all receipts, emails and reports to prove that you paid for something, that you didn’t use it and that you did not get reimbursed.
Finally, consider optional extras you may need, says Sarah Pickford of Travel Counsellors, such as a winter sports holiday. Also ensure all individuals can travel independently on that cover, she adds. And remember: “Cheap isn’t necessarily best.”

- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.

- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.
