The Louvre will be the first of the three museums to open as part of the initial phase of Saadiyat Island's cultural district.

The opening of the Louvre is expected to be pushed back by about year from 2013, although a date has yet to be confirmed, TDIC said.

The UAE Government and its French counterpart entered into an agreement for the creation of the Louvre almost five years ago.

Abu Dhabi has started amassing pieces of art for its collection and some building foundation work has been done. The architect Jean Nouvel was signed up for the design of the project, one of the main features of which is a 180-metre-wide dome. The main construction contract has yet to be awarded.
