A first ship has berthed in the deep-water quay of London Gateway, the container port being developed by DP World on the Thames Estuary in the United Kingdom.
The Wieniawski, a cargo vessel that began its journey in China several weeks ago, was carrying four new automatic stacking cranes for the port's container handling area.
The 170-metre-long ship was safely guided from the piloting station in the Prince's Channel to London Gateway on Friday by a Port of London Authority pilot.
The London Gateway chief executive, Simon Moore, and the harbourmaster, Colin Hitchcock, presented the ship's captain, Captain D Musil, and the port pilot, Simon Liley, each with a bronze model dhow to commemorate the event.
"The Wieniawski arrived on time, on schedule and berthed safely," Mr Hitchcock said. "This is a great big Christmas present for the whole team."
Mr Moore said, "Historically, London has played a major role in the world's shipping industry and today marks the start of a return to former glories. Soon, London will once again be able to boast one of the world's most advanced ports and have regained its place at the heart of the UK's trade."
"By building a new port for the UK which is closer to the major population and distribution centres such as London, Birmingham and Manchester, we can make supply chains more efficient and reduce costs for shippers across the UK."
London Gateway is to open in the fourth quarter of next year and is designed to handle the world's largest container ships. It will be integrated with one million square metres of logistics and distribution warehousing, providing businesses with opportunities to reduce supply chain costs, time and carbon-dioxide emissions.
"It's a great honour to have played a part in such a historic occasion," Mr Liley said. "Everything went to plan and having undertaken numerous practice simulations for the berthing of the world's largest ships at London Gateway, I'm now looking forward to their arrival when the port opens in 2013."

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.

Here, Dr Mohamed El Abiary, paediatric consultant at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai, shares some advice for parents whose children are fasting during the holy month of Ramadan:
Gradual fasting and golden points - For children under the age of 10, follow a step-by-step approach to fasting and don't push them beyond their limits. Start with a few hours fasting a day and increase it to a half fast and full fast when the child is ready. Every individual's ability varies as per the age and personal readiness. You could introduce a points system that awards the child and offers them encouragement when they make progress with the amount of hours they fast
Why fast? - Explain to your child why they are fasting. By shedding light on the importance of abstaining from food and drink, children may feel more encouraged to give it there all during the observance period. It is also a good opportunity to teach children about controlling urges, doing good for others and instilling healthy food habits
Sleep and suhoor - A child needs adequate sleep every night - at least eight hours. Make sure to set a routine early bedtime so he/she has sufficient time to wake up for suhoor, which is an essential meal at the beginning of the day
Good diet - Nutritious food is crucial to ensuring a healthy Ramadan for children. They must refrain from eating too much junk food as well as canned goods and snacks and drinks high in sugar. Foods that are rich in nutrients, vitamins and proteins, like fruits, fresh meats and vegetables, make for a good balanced diet

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
