Etisalat is hoping to boost revenue by offering digital transformation services for clients in the UAE, with the launch of its “Etisalat Digital” business unit.
Etisalat Digital, unveiled yesterday at the Gitex Technology Week exhibition in Dubai, is to expand the telco’s existing digital services, helping UAE-based government and corporate clients to transform their businesses by means of technologies such as cloud computing, Internet of Things, mobile applications and big data services.
Etisalat expects the market for such digital transformation services to be worth some Dh50 billion in the next five to seven years.
“Etisalat is already playing in various digital domains with strong references such as Dubai Parks and Resorts and the upcoming Dubai Expo 2020,” said Salvador Anglada, Etisalat’s chief business officer.
Mr Anglada told delegates at yesterday’s Mobile 360 conference in Dubai that Etisalat had delivered the entire digital infrastructure for Dubai Parks and Resorts, including parking and transportation systems, in addition to its traditional telecoms infrastructure.
“We strongly believe that a smarter education, health care, government, industry and economy are possible with the right use of technology,” said Francisco Salcedo, Etisalat’s senior vice president of digital solutions. “Together with our customers and partners, we are helping to build a brilliant reality in the UAE.”

How Islam's view of posthumous transplant surgery changed
Transplants from the deceased have been carried out in hospitals across the globe for decades, but in some countries in the Middle East, including the UAE, the practise was banned until relatively recently.
Opinion has been divided as to whether organ donations from a deceased person is permissible in Islam.
The body is viewed as sacred, during and after death, thus prohibiting cremation and tattoos.
One school of thought viewed the removal of organs after death as equally impermissible.
That view has largely changed, and among scholars and indeed many in society, to be seen as permissible to save another life.

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.
