Abu-Dhabi based Etisalat Group grew its subscriber base in the third quarter, boosted by a better performance in its home market.
The increase in customer numbers comes as the UAE’s largest telecom operator and local rival du begin competition over fixed voice and broadband services.
Etisalat also reported an 8.6 per cent drop in net profit for the three months to September as forex losses and a higher royalty to the government ate into earnings. Etisalat's net profit was Dh1.9 billion for the quarter. Revenue for the group was 1 per cent lower at Dh13bn.
The company attributed the revenue decline to “unfavourable exchange rate movements and competitive environments in selected markets”.
Sebastien Henin, head of asset management at Abu-Dhabi based The National Investor, said that Etisalat faced regulatory pressure in Pakistan as some subscriptions were deactivated for security reasons. But overall, the operator reported “acceptable performance that is in line with the market forecast”.
Etisalat’s subscribers in the UAE rose 7 per cent year on year to 11.6 million by the end of the third quarter. Revenues from the UAE were up 6 per cent year on year to Dh7.2bn on a “strong performance in the mobile and fixed broadband and ICT segments”, it said.
Last week, chief executive Ahmad Julfar told The National that Etisalat is aiming to get half of its revenue from data.
Currently, data contributes 30 per cent of the telecom operator’s revenue.
Etisalat's pledge to grow its revenue from data comes as it enters into full market competition with du over fixed voice and broadband services.
The pair last week said that they will be expanding their services to the areas of the country where each had previously operated exclusively.

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
The taxidermy centre was established 12 years ago and is headed by Dr Ulrich Wernery.

Classification of skills
A worker is categorised as skilled by the MOHRE based on nine levels given in the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) issued by the International Labour Organisation.
A skilled worker would be someone at a professional level (levels 1 – 5) which includes managers, professionals, technicians and associate professionals, clerical support workers, and service and sales workers.
The worker must also have an attested educational certificate higher than secondary or an equivalent certification, and earn a monthly salary of at least Dh4,000.
What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.
