The shipping services company P&O Maritime, a subsidiary of the ports operator DP World, has bought a majority stake in the Spanish company Remolcadores de Puerto y Altura (Repasa) as part of an attempt to expand its services to tankers carrying liquefied natural gas.
Tarragona-headquartered Repasa operates a fleet of 12 tugboats offering marine services to offshore oil and gas operations in the Mediterranean, the North Sea and West Africa.
The company was recently awarded a long-term contract to provide berthing at the Equatorial Guinean port of Punta Europa.
DP World, one of the largest port operators in the world, said that as a result of the deal it would form a new joint venture company with Repasa concentrating on support services to gas tankers.
DP World said that the joint venture would enable P&O to expand its global geographic presence to include the Mediterranean and West African markets, and add to its capabilities and experience in liquefied natural gas offshore operations.
“We have identified the liquefied natural gas marine sector as one of our core businesses that will help us expand in the future,” said Rado Antalovic, the managing director of P&O. “Independent studies indicate the LNG market is set to double in size worldwide by 2020 and we are confident we can deliver strong long-term sustainable growth.”
The value of the transaction was not disclosed.
