The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), plans to commission a Dh654 million water transmission network, the utility said yesterday.
Dewa will commission for the supply and construction of a 73-kilometre, 600-1200mm water transmission network across Dubai as well as another 300km, 100-450mm water transmission network.
“These networks will manage the increasing demand for water in the emirate, providing a high-quality infrastructure for Dubai’s sustainable development, based on the highest international standards,” said Saeed Al Tayer, Dewa’s chief executive.
Dewa has increased its budget by 3.4 per cent to Dh23.6 billion this year from Dh22.8bn last year to meet rising demand for water and power.
Last year, total power generation increased by 6.3 per cent while water supply grew by 9.18 per cent.
Dewa has launched more than Dh27bn worth of projects that use the Independent Power Producer model to build new capacity particularly in renewable energy and diversify the emirate’s energy mix.
The utility wants clean energy to make up 7 per cent of its energy mix by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050.
Higher demand for power and water last year from Dubai’s growing population lifted earnings, which grew 16 per cent year-on-year to Dh6.2bn.
The Dubai government is Dewa’s sole shareholder.
