American shale revolution techniques head to Arabian Gulf as BP wins Oman gas project approval

BP won a green light yesterday for a major tight gas project in Oman that will bring many of the techniques of the American shale revolution to the Arabian Gulf.

A gas sales agreement and revised production-sharing agreement signed by BP and the government paves the way for US$16 billion of investment in Oman’s Khazzan field.

Under the plan, BP will drill about 300 wells to produce 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day, equal to a third of Oman’s current gas supplies.

“Today’s signing is an important step in the sultanate of Oman’s plans to meet growing demand for energy over the coming decades and to contribute to economic development in Oman,” said Mohammed Al Rumhy, the Omani oil minister. “The Khazzan project is the largest new upstream project in Oman and a pioneering development in the region in unlocking technically challenging tight gas through technology.”

The sultanate is eager to ramp up fuel supplies to meet growing domestic power consumption. Besides the tight gas development, this month it will complete a pilot test for a technology that uses solar heat, rather than heat generated by gas turbines, to produce oil from aged fields. In August, Oman signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to build a pipeline transporting Iranian gas under the Sea of Oman.

Construction at Khazzan is scheduled to start next year, and first gas is expected in 2017. Khazzan is part of Block 61, which holds an estimated 100 trillion cubic feet of gas in a 2,800 square kilometre area.

The development plan includes a 500km pipeline network and horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, the same technology used to unlock gas from shale formations in the US. Unlike shale gas, which is trapped in sedimentary rock that must be blasted apart with chemicals and sand to allow gas to flow, tight gas is sealed in non-porous rock-like sandstone or limestone, often as deep as 10,000ft below the ground.

BP and Oman Oil, a 40 per cent joint venture partner in the project, also agreed to launch a feasibility study for a 1 million tonne per year acetic acid plant in Duqm that would launch in 2019. Acetic acid, which is naturally found in vinegar, can be used in downstream industries ranging from photo film to fabric production.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
  • Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
  • Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
  • Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
  • Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.

Labour dispute

The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.

Going grey? A stylist's advice

If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
