Witnesses identify Salman Khan in 2002 accident case



Spelling trouble for Salman Khan, two of three witnesses in the 2002 hit-and-run case identified him in a sessions court in Mumbai on Tuesday. One of the witnesses said he had seen the film star alighting from his SUV on the night of September 28, 2002, after the vehicle mowed down five pavement dwellers – killing one and injuring four others. The prosecution had earlier submitted a list of 64 witnesses but will only examine a few of them during the re-trial. Enhanced charges were announced against Khan in December last year. – IANS

Spike Lee to base new TV series on his first feature

The filmmaker Spike Lee's feature debut She's Gotta Have It is on its way to becoming a comedy series for the American cable network Showtime. Lee will write and direct the adaptation. The 1986 film is about a young woman who enjoys the company of three suitors while trying to avoid committing to any of them. Lee's TV adaptation will be a contemporary take on the feature, which he filmed in 12 days in Brooklyn. – The National staff

Fox orders shows from Lee Daniels and Steven Spielberg

A family drama about a hip-hop business empire from the filmmaker Lee Daniels and a coming-of-age series from Steven Spielberg will be part of Fox's 2014-15 season. Daniels, the director of The Butler and Precious, is writing, directing and producing Empire, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P Henson, Fox said. The series will feature original music and covers of current songs. Spielberg is among the producers of Red Band Society with an ensemble cast starring Octavia Spencer. Fox described the series as an unconventional drama-comedy about teenagers that's set in a hospital paediatric wing. – AP

Shamma Hamdan to perform in Fujairah

City Centre Fujairah will host a series of concerts, beginning with the Emirati songstress Shamma Hamdan, who will take the stage on Friday, May 16, from 7 to 8pm. Hamdan will sing traditional Khaleeji songs, backed up by a band. The performance will be followed by a meet-and-greet with fans. The line-up for the rest of the concerts planned at the shopping centre has not yet been revealed. – The National staff
