Gabrielle Chanel cut a fascinating figure: she was superstitious yet progressive, a patron of the arts yet a deep-dyed businesswoman. The designer once said “a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”. Yet she also thought “it’s always better to be slightly underdressed”. Contradictory or not, the women who attended Chanel’s Gabrielle Bag Dinner, hosted by Caroline de Maigret and Pharrell Williams on April 6, channelled a bit of both of Coco’s isms.
