What we learnt from the first Bright trailer, starring Will Smith

The first trailer for upcoming Will Smith action caper Bright just dropped — but the 38-second clip gives little away to fantasy film fans.

Set for a December release, the Netflix original production reunites Smith with Suicide Squad director David Ayer — also known for Day of Watch — and shades of both films can be detected in the trailer.

Smith and co-star Joel Edgerton are cops who set on a night patrol, where they appear to encounter all-sorts of freaky happenings. “I’m assuming this doesn’t end well,” quips Smith in the trailer’s only dialogue. Orcs, elves and fairies are promised.

Here’s what else we learnt:

Will Smith will pull out a mean looking sword.

A baddie with a shotgun will sport a scary Suicide Squad-esque mask.

An explosive action sequence will kick off in a supermarket.

Woody Guthrie is on the soundtrack.

There’s lot of supernatural silliness with blue-skinned blonde women — orcs? elves? — bathed in spooky low light.

After the Suicide Squad debacle, there's a lot riding on this one — well $90 million to be precise — for Ayer and Smith alike. Keeping slight on detail may be a smart strategy. Find out more at www.netflix.com/bright.
