UAE-based filmmaker gets Australian festival screening

The Dubai-based Egyptian filmmaker Moustafa Zakaria will screen his short film The Pillars at the Arab Film Festival Australia, which runs from Thursday until July 15, with screenings held in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Zakaria's film focuses on the societal pressures facing a divorced Emirati couple. "The film is really about finding ways to cope with different kinds of pressure," said Zakaria. "The Arab world is at a very interesting fulcrum. Some feel under pressure, as they try to find a way to contribute to society - and because of that, there is a growing polarisation." The festival previously showcased the UAE director Ali Mostafa's feature film City of Life in 2010. Zakaria's previous work The Beggar and Moustafa's Brain won the best student film award at the 2008 Abu Dhabi Film Festival. He is currently working on the script for his debut feature 95 Special. * Saeed Saeed

Kunis and Kutcher fuel dating rumours

Rumours of a blossoming romance have been dogging Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher during recent months, though they have repeatedly denied the claims. On Saturday, the two were photographed dining together in a Santa Monica restaurant. Last week they were spotted riding Kutcher's motorcycle around Hollywood. In April, after they were spotted on a three-day getaway to the coastal town of Carpinteria, Kunis told the celebrity show Extra: "I've never commented on my personal life - I'm not going to start now. It's absurd. A friend is a friend."

Swedish House Mafia to call it quits

The DJ group Swedish House Mafia will call it quits after a forthcoming tour. "We want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last," they posted on their website. "We want to thank every single one of you who came with us on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved." Formed in 2008, the trio of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso last year became the first ever electronic dance act to play at Madison Square Garden. They are set to begin their final tour next month. * AFP

Jeopardy! host suffers mild heart attack

The Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek is in a Los Angeles hospital recovering from a mild heart attack. He was admitted on Saturday, the same day Jeopardy! won a Daytime Emmy award for best game show. In a Fox News interview last month, the 71-year-old, who has been hosting Jeopardy! for 28 years, hinted about retirement. "Yes, I've been thinking of retiring. People have been telling me, 'Alex, you've got to go for at least 30 years. You've just done 28.' That has a nice ring to it - put in your 30." * AP

Find the right policy for you

Don’t wait until the week you fly to sign up for insurance – get it when you book your trip. Insurance covers you for cancellation and anything else that can go wrong before you leave.

Some insurers, such as World Nomads, allow you to book once you are travelling – but, as Mr Mohammed found out, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.

Check your credit card before booking insurance to see if you have any travel insurance as a benefit – most UAE banks, such as Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, have cards that throw in insurance as part of their package. But read the fine print – they may only cover emergencies while you’re travelling, not cancellation before a trip.

Pre-existing medical conditions such as a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy and even asthma may not be included as standard. Again, check the terms, exclusions and limitations of any insurance carefully.

If you want trip cancellation or curtailment, baggage loss or delay covered, you may need a higher-grade plan, says Ambareen Musa of Souqalmal.com. Decide how much coverage you need for emergency medical expenses or personal liability. Premium insurance packages give up to $1 million (Dh3.7m) in each category, Ms Musa adds.

Don’t wait for days to call your insurer if you need to make a claim. You may be required to notify them within 72 hours. Gather together all receipts, emails and reports to prove that you paid for something, that you didn’t use it and that you did not get reimbursed.

Finally, consider optional extras you may need, says Sarah Pickford of Travel Counsellors, such as a winter sports holiday. Also ensure all individuals can travel independently on that cover, she adds. And remember: “Cheap isn’t necessarily best.”

Although social media can be harmful to our mental health, paradoxically, one of the antidotes comes with the many social-media accounts devoted to normalising mental-health struggles. With Hope UAE is one of them.
The group, which has about 3,600 followers, was started three years ago by five Emirati women to address the stigma surrounding the subject. Via Instagram, the group recently began featuring personal accounts by Emiratis. The posts are written under the hashtag #mymindmatters, along with a black-and-white photo of the subject holding the group’s signature red balloon.
“Depression is ugly,” says one of the users, Amani. “It paints everything around me and everything in me.”
Saaed, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of caring for four family members with psychological disorders. “I’ve had no support and no resources here to help me,” he says. “It has been, and still is, a one-man battle against the demons of fractured minds.”
In addition to With Hope UAE’s frank social-media presence, the group holds talks and workshops in Dubai. “Change takes time,” Reem Al Ali, vice chairman and a founding member of With Hope UAE, told The National earlier this year. “It won’t happen overnight, and it will take persistent and passionate people to bring about this change.”
