Top Gear star attacked in Argentina for number plate ‘insult’

Jeremy Clarkson and other members of the crew of the BBC TV motoring show Top Gear were forced to flee Argentina after being pelted with rocks by a crowd of about 50 locals. They were using three cars for filming, one of which was a Porsche with the license plate H982 FKL. The Argentines considered this an insulting reference to the brief but bloody 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands. The cars were abandoned and one person suffered a minor injury. The BBC denied the license plate had been chosen intentionally. Clarkson is no stranger to allegations of insulting other nationalities. In 2011, the BBC apologised for comments he made about Mexicans. Britain's broadcasting watchdogs in July criticised his use of an offensive word for Asian people, and he was forced to apologise this year after apparently being caught on camera using the "N" word while reciting an old nursery rhyme. – AP
