• Highway. February 20. Alia Bhatt, who made her debut alongside Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra in Student of the Year (see Hasee toh Phasee), stars with the suave Randeep Hooda in this road-trip drama by Imtiaz Ali, the filmmaker more famous for lighthearted romances such as Jab We Met (2007) and Love Aaj Kal (2009). The music is by A R Rahman, whose last soundtrack, Raanjhanaa (2013), will remain on everyone’s playlists for several years to come.

  • Shaadi ke Side Effects. February 27. Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan star in this romantic comedy as a couple whose marriage has lost its spark. Directed by Saket Chaudhary, it’s a sequel to the 2002 film Pyaar Ke Side Effects, which starred Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat, who did an excellent job playing a couple with different ideas about commitment. If the trailer of Shaadi Ke Side Effects is anything to go by, Akhtar and Balan have a winner on their hands – their chemistry is wonderful and their comic timing excellent. • Hasee toh Phasee. February 6. The versatile Parineeti Chopra, cousin of the A-list actress Priyanka Chopra, stars alongside the wooden Sidharth Malhotra (in his second film after Karan Johar’s Student of the Year). Watch it for young Parineeti, who is perfectly cast as a rebellious twentysomething who’s trying to find what she really wants. Priyanka, you’ve got competition. Produced by K Jo and Anurag Kashyap, directed by Vinil Mathew. Courtesy Dharma Productions

  • Gulaab Gang. March 6. Set for release during Holi, India’s festival of colours, Gulaab Gang is inspired by a real-life group of pink sari-clad vigilantes in central India who zero in on crimes against women and dish out retribution and justice. Have you seen the posters? Madhuri Dixit-Nene dominates them all, brandishing weapons and scowling fiercely. Up against her is Juhi Chawla, playing a baddie for the first time in her career. It’s a double whammy of sorts: two fabulous actresses together on screen for the first time; and the dewy-eyed Chawla as an evil politician. The film also features the vivacious Shilpa Shukla, of Chak De! India and B.A. Pass fame. Directed by the debutant Soumik Sen. We predict this one’s going to be a blockbuster. • Bhoothnath Returns. April 10. Amitabh Bachchan is the friendly ghost in this comedy-horror franchise directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Also features Juhi Chawla (see Gulaab Gang) and Boman Irani, that wonderful character actor. Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor feature in a special cameo. Bachchan’s still the best of the lot, though.
