The UAE tweets - our round-up

  • English
  • Arabic

Every week we'll round up our favourite tweets from the UAE. Things that caught our interest or made us smile.

Around the UAE

@tomgara is getting cross at Pizza Express, and if twitter is anything to go by, so is the rest of Dubai. "Pizza Express in the UAE, you are my enemy forever. May your merciless SMS spamming result in a great karmic punishment."

@DubaiNameShame had us in stitches as he gave a live twitter feed covering his sister-in-law's visit, culminating in this tweet: "Ladies & Gentlemen (and all United fans) I can confirm sis-in-law has left the building – that dancing bald man outside is me :)"

@EmaratiArabic is promising to teach us how to speak the local lingo: "If you're reading this you probably want to learn Arabic! All you have to do is learn my tweets and, most importantly, USE THEM!" We've tried out a few of her phrases and we're very impressed.

Business / promotion

Oh @SlicesAE, that sounds delicious: "Try our new special of the week; beef ham, cheddar cheese and boiled egg enhanced with spicy mayo in a healthy wholewheat grain bread!"

We say yes! @JoeAkkawi! "I wonder if giving away 2 Madonna Tickets is still a good prize. Who wants?"

@Catboy_Dubai is giving away tickets to the movies! "We've got Dark Towers premiere tickets to give away. Asking for your #CelebrityVerbs. Leave yours here: http://on.fb.me/kXLgK2 RT"

News

@DubaiPoliceHQ: "Dubai Police is notifying owners of confiscated vehicles and motorcycles to report to fines section. http://yfrog.com/nwgygsp #Dubai #UAE"

Our best twitter news story this week was Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed taking to the medium in despair when Etisalat wouldn't stop spamming him. //bit.ly/IlWFkH #UAE

Favourite trend

#BringtheN3aal really made us snicker. At the number one spot in UAE twitter trends this week, it seems to have amused everyone as much as it did us. N3aal in Khaleej Arabic means slipper. If something irritates you, #BringTheN3aal and give it a thwack. Here are some of the funniest:

@Showrtella: Taking pictures of everything you eat #BringTheN3aal

@ShmoukhAlsaeed: Wearing sunglasses in the mall #BringTheN3aal

@FatmaAlHabtoor: When you spot #GAMBOO3AGIRLS thats when you #BringTheN3aal to smash the extra hair and resize their heads to the normal.

And thanks to @ishehhi for the funny picture.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
  • Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
  • Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
  • Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
  • Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
