Actress Sheila MacRae of ‘Honeymooners’ dies at 92
Sheila MacRae, a veteran stage, film and TV performer best known for playing Alice Kramden in the 1960s re-creation of The Honeymooners, has died. She was 92. The actress died on Thursday at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey, said MacRae's granddaughter, Allison Mullavey. A singer, dancer and actress, McRae was married to the Oklahoma star Gordon MacRae for 26 years and they appeared together in 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show when The Beatles were featured. In an earlier version of The Honeymooners, Audrey Meadows starred with Jackie Gleason as the lovebirds and sparring partners Ralph and Alice Kramden. Sheila MacRae replaced Meadows as Alice in a later version from 1966-70 on The Jackie Gleason Show. MacRae was the last survivor from the 1960s edition of The Jackie Gleason Show, who played Trixie Norton, died last autumn. – Associated Press
Sennheiser helps promote Farhan’s social campaign
The microphones and headphones brand Sennheiser will do its bit for the actor Farhan Akhtar’s social campaign Mard – Men Against Rape and Discrimination. Akhtar’s Sennheiser-SKM 2000 microphone will be redesigned to display the Mard logo, which is a moustache (Mard is Hindi for man). U2 postpone next album to 2015
U2 are pushing back the release of their 13th album to next year and delaying a tour to support it despite a new single and many high-profile media appearances, the music industry journal Billboard reports. Citing anonymous sources, it said the Irish mega band fronted by Bono have scheduled additional sessions with the producers Ryan Tedder and Paul Epworth, although Danger Mouse remains the project’s central producer. “That magic that the band always seems to capture ... they have yet to capture it,” Billboard quoted a source close to the project as saying. Since the start of this year, U2 have played at the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, on Jimmy Fallon’s debut hosting NBC’s The Tonight Show and American football’s Super Bowl. – AFP
Kesha is out of rehab for an eating disorder
Kesha's representative confirmed on Friday that the singer had checked out of a rehab facility after entering for treatment in January. She has also apparently dropped the dollar sign from her name, changing her Twitter handle from Ke$ha to Kesha and writing: "Feeling healthy & working on tons of new music." The 26-year-old pop star thanked fans "for all the love & support u have given me." She said she entered rehab to "learn to love myself again, exactly as I am." Kesha, whose real name is Kesha Rose Sebert, is the performer of such tunes as Crazy Love, Die Young and Timber with Pitbull. His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

Gender pay parity on track in the UAE
The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.
"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."
Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.
"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.
As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.

Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Its motto is ‘open doors, open minds’. All year-round, visitors can sign up for a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch or dinner meal, as well as a range of walking tours, including ones to sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque or Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.
