Social media reacts to Meghan and Harry's explosive Oprah interview: 'We should be ashamed'

Thousands spoke out in support of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their 'tell all' interview

As Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey for what might be the most explosive royal interview of all time, Twitter, naturally, had a lot to say about it.

The tell-all interview broadcast in the US on Sunday evening and, as expected, it was filled with more than a few shocking revelations – from clearing up (and confirming) tabloid rumours about rifts between members of the royal family, to sharing that there were concerns over how dark their son's skin would be ahead of his birth.

As the interview was shown, it dominated Twitter trends, with many taking to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Many were concerned over the revelations, particularly the claims around the colour of Archie’s skin.

“Conversations were had before Archie was born about how dark his skin might be?! Disgusted but not surprised!”, wrote one user.

“That institution is stuck in the 20th century – they had concerns and conversations about how dark Archie's skin would be and what that would mean. I’m fuming,” another said.

Many also took the opportunity to express their support for the couple.

"As a Brit, I feel it's important to say, many of us believe Meghan and Harry. We remember how Diana was treated. We know how The Firm operate. The ones who believe the media and The Firm, tend to be right wingers, racists and Brexiteers. Not all Brits," wrote @JamesPrescott77.

Another user added: “Regardless of status, fame, wealth (or lack thereof) nobody is obligated to relinquish their humanity. Meghan and Harry chose themselves and chose life over a fairytale and that is perfectly OK."

During the interview, Prince Harry also spoke of his fear of “history repeating itself”, referencing the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who was killed while being chased by paparazzi in Paris in 1997.

He also revealed that he was financially cut off by his family during the first half of 2020, but was able to survive thanks to money left to him by his late mother.

“The royal family cut Harry off financially. And Princess Diana left Harry a trust that he could use for the transition. He believes she knew he might need it someday," Twitter user Atima Omara commented.

Many also shared how proud they believe Princess Diana would be of her son for speaking out.

Hundreds of people have also praised Markle's bravery for opening up about her mental health.

The interview has also raised questions about the British monarchy, with one user saying Britain should feel "ashamed".

"I hope this marks the start of a nation questioning the institutions and norms it accepts as parts of British life. We should be ashamed we still have a monarchy, we should be ashamed that this couple were hounded out of the country," they wrote.

And, of course, many were just very much enjoying the explosive nature of it all.

Some joked it was like watching a live episode of Netflix's The Crown.

While others shared memes joking about how busy the show's producers and writers would be after the interview.

Yet to comment on the interview and the revelations made, however, are any representatives for the royal family.

The interview is set to show in the UK on ITV at 9pm.
