Sam Mendes won't be directing the next Bond

Despite being behind the most successful James Bond in history, Sam Mendes has now announced that he won't direct the next.

Bond 24 (ok, it’ll probably get a better name going forward) is set to start shooting at the end of the year, with Daniel Craig likely to be joined by new recruits Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes for a 2014 release. Mendes had been hotly tipped to take the reins again.

Alas not.

“It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie,” Mendes told Empire magazine. “But I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond.”

So the hunt is on for a replacement. Why not just give it to JJ Abrams like everything else? He’s hardly busy...
