October is shaping up to be a busy month for the stylish set and kicking things off on the 4th is Fashion Forward's Season 4. The three-day event will be staged once again at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai and registration is now open.
While the couture and ready-to-wear line-up of designers is not drastically different from previous seasons, there are some new additions, including the Iranian designer Maral Yazarloo and the Emirati designer Farha Al Shamsi, who will show under the label Ceremony.
Emerging designers will, of course, share space with FFWD stalwarts such as Furne One, Essa and Danny Tabet. The couturier Michael Cinco will also make a welcome return following his presentation in the first season.
On the collaboration front, top-line news is that FFWD has teamed up with trend service WGSN and the digital platform Fashion GPS.
“This season we’re focused on really strengthening and magnifying the visibility of our designers to the global fashion community,” says Bong Guerrero, the founder and chief executive of Fashion Forward. “WGSN will, for the first time, be forecasting from Fashion Forward which is amazing news for us. As for Fashion GPS, they have over 20,000 names and entities in their database which means that every look from the FFWD catwalk will be distributed to them, so I’m sure a lot can come from that.”
Dubai Design District (d3) is on board again as partners, with the aim of nurturing regional talent and helping make good the city’s dreams of becoming a world-class fashion hub.
“I definitely think that FFWD is gaining momentum,” says Maitha Al Suwaidi, the senior manager of business development for d3. “There are lots of returning designers this season and that shows that people have seen the potential in the platform, whether from just an awareness perspective or receiving orders from buyers.”
Expected to prove popular again this season is The Garden, a dedicated exhibition space for about 50 accessory designers to showcase their brands. A rundown of industry talks is also set to be announced, with macro-sector issues and regional topics given equal attention.
“There will be more talks on the conservative fashion side and discussions about the overall state of the fashion industry,” says Al Suwaidi “Some of the online recordings of the talks from last season had higher viewership than some of the shows. That really demonstrates that a lot of people are interested in them.”

Sole survivors
- Cecelia Crocker was on board Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 1987 when it crashed in Detroit, killing 154 people, including her parents and brother. The plane had hit a light pole on take off
- George Lamson Jr, from Minnesota, was on a Galaxy Airlines flight that crashed in Reno in 1985, killing 68 people. His entire seat was launched out of the plane
- Bahia Bakari, then 12, survived when a Yemenia Airways flight crashed near the Comoros in 2009, killing 152. She was found clinging to wreckage after floating in the ocean for 13 hours.
- Jim Polehinke was the co-pilot and sole survivor of a 2006 Comair flight that crashed in Lexington, Kentucky, killing 49.
