Will Avatar rule the roost at this year's Academy Awards or will The Hurt Locker, a low-budget masterpiece directed by Katherine Bigelow, the former wife of Avatar director James Cameron, walk away with the Best Picture Oscar? The nominees for this year's awards were announced late today (5.30am PST/5.30pm Abu Dhabi) and the race is now on to garner votes before the March 7 Academy Awards ceremony, the culmination of an awards season that began in December when the critics' associations began issuing their picks and pans for the year. Oscar prognosticators often look to the awards given by the various trade unions and the Golden Globes as indications of who will walk off with the granddaddy of all movie prizes. But this year the results have been mixed. The Golden Globe for best drama was awarded to Avatar by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association but that organisation's voting members are not likely to be members of the Academy, the body whose votes are the only ones that count come Oscar time. The Producers Guild, the Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), whose members are more likely to be Academy members as well, chose to recognise other films with their year-end awards. Also, with Oscar's best picture nominees increased from five to 10 for the first time this year, the quest for the top Oscar will be more of a horse race than ever before. Here is a list of films and artists in the major categories for an Oscar statuette this year. Some of Darwish's last words

"They see their tomorrows slipping out of their reach. And though it seems to them that everything outside this reality is heaven, yet they do not want to go to that heaven. They stay, because they are afflicted with hope." - Mahmoud Darwish, to attendees of the Palestine Festival of Literature, 2008

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
