No point fighting curly hair when it’s humid, and other tips by Sally Hershberger

What are the key styling trends of the moment?

Sexy, moveable hair ... it’s all about texture.

If you could get your hands on one person’s hair, whose would it be and why?

Jenifer Lawrence. She is supercool and she has great hair ... I would love to make it edgier.

What’s the worst thing people can do to their hair?

Use the wrong product. Fifty per cent of great hair is the product you use. Product can make or break the style, and using the right product for your hair is key. Especially when it comes to shampoo and conditioner ... you really need to use something that doesn’t weigh your hair down.

What products do you swear by?

I never do anyone’s hair unless I put the 24K Sally Hershberger Volumizing Mousse in it. It’s a heat-protectant, gives great moveable volume and cuts blow-dry time. When I’m doing a haircut, I always finish with my 24K Superiority Complex Texturizing Paste – it completes my haircuts and brings out the layers and the dimension in the colour. If I’m on a photo shoot, I like using Sebastian Shaper Plus Hairspray because it’s not sticky or tacky, and you can run your hands through it.

What’s your top hairstyling tip?

It’s all about the right product, which is very important, particularly with this type of climate and weather. The need for products that are humidity-resistant is key. Liquid Assets, my latest product, is humidity- and heat-resistant to help keep the hair cuticle sealed as much as possible. Something I tell my clients if they have curly hair, is that there is no point fighting it when it’s humid. Instead, embrace the curls and make sure you’re using products to seal your hair cuticle. My 24K Dry Oil is another great one.

What are your must-have tools of the trade?

I love using the 1-inch Hot Tools Curling Iron to create beautiful, beach-like waves. I always use this to wave my hair and get natural-looking texture. When it comes to a blow-dryer, it’s hard for me to find a quality product, but the Solano blow-dryer is great because it survives the wear and tear of my schedule. I prefer the Sally Hershberger Professional Haircare 1-inch Round Brush because it gives me the right amount of volume, and the boar bristles allow me to really grip the hair well when I’m styling. The Mason-Pearson Popular Brush detangles the hair without creating breakage and avoids frizz. And finally, I love the Scunci No-Slip Grip Chunky Jaw Clips. I pin the hair and let it set for a natural, wavy texture.

If you could have one celebrity’s hair, whose would you have?

Sienna Miller has great style. She is always stylish. She always exudes a cool vibe when it comes to her hair.

Key findings of Jenkins report
  • Founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al Banna, "accepted the political utility of violence"
  • Views of key Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, Sayyid Qutb, have “consistently been understood” as permitting “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” and “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
  • Muslim Brotherhood at all levels has repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians.
  • Laying out the report in the House of Commons, David Cameron told MPs: "The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism."
Going grey? A stylist's advice

If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”
