May the fourth be with you: Star Wars Day fun for the little people

May the Fourth is approaching, and with it, Star Wars Day. If a back-to-back marathon of all eight ‘canon’ films, to date, seems a bit much for your little darlings, there are less time-consuming, and probably more child-friendly options available too.

Toy Store in the Mall of the Emirates will be hosting a Star Wars-themed Lego event on May 4, 5 and 6, where two LEGO-certified professionals from Bright Brick will be helping kids to create a giant Star Wars Lego mosaic, as well as teaching kids to build their very own X-Wing spaceship. Sessions are free and take place on the fourth itself at 5pm and 8pm, then at 3pm and 6pm on the fifth and sixth.

Borders Bookshop in Dubai Festival City, meanwhile, will welcome little ones to a special live book reading featuring excerpts from the Star Wars books in English from 4.30pm-6pm on May 4th and May 5th. Each child attending will be gifted a free book and other Star Wars goodies, and kids are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Star Wars characters.

Star Wars Day (may the fourth be with you) is celebrated around the world on 4 May in celebration of George Lucas’, and now Disney’s, iconic movie franchise. The unofficial holiday allows Star Wars fans to celebrate their love for the films in many wacky ways, including special events at Walt Disney World Florida, cosplay as iconic characters such as Chewbacca, the Stormtroopers, Han Solo and Princess Leia. Both the Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Festival City events are free to enter and no prior booking is needed. Please note spaces are limited at both events and not all attendees are guaranteed space or free gifts

The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. There will also be discussions on subjects including ‘Who is the Audience for Islamic Art?’ and ‘New Markets for Islamic Design.’ A live performance from Kuwaiti guitarist Yousif Yaseen should be one of the highlights of the day.
