Dubai nightspot Mahiki has pledged its commitment to the animal rights body PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) by proclaiming itself a 'fur-free zone'. From today, should visitors arrive at the venue with so much as an animal fur trimmed bag, boot or hairband they will be refused entry.

“It will be up to the door managers to decide and they are currently being briefed” said a source involved with Mahiki’s campaign “It will, of course, sometimes be difficult to know whether people are wearing real fur or not, but ‘touch-tests’ are unlikely. We don’t want any issues and, so to avoid that we would really encourage the public not to wear fur.”

Mahiki’s sister club in London’s West End, a popular hangout for royals and celebrities, has already enforced the fur-ban. British socialite Meg Matthews added her voice to PETA’s cause and the nightclub’s new policy:

"Mahiki's all about having a good time, but it recognises that there's nothing fun about fur" she said "We hope that other clubs follow Mahiki's positive example by going fur-free as well."
