The Dubai-based travel technology start-up Guiddoo was set up last year as a smartphone alternative to expensive tour guides and travel books for leisure travellers.
Entrepreneurs Nidhi Varma and Vineet Budki have now launched the Guiddoo app, that allows travellers to download tours, maps, images, textual and audio information about sites – from the Taj Mahal and the Colosseum to Dubai’s Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. The content is collated from registered tour guides, online sources such as YouTube and through collaborations with tourism boards.
The app currently offers tours for 78 historical sites in 25 countries, which can be accessed without an internet network once downloaded. An upgraded version, to be launched on Monday, includes new destinations and tourist spots, allowing for in-app booking of activities, hotels and a 24-hour help service. In the future, they plan to develop services with Google Glass and Oculus.
After downloading the app from Apple and Android stores, users can access free features with their social-networking accounts or through Google. For now, audio tours to all destinations can be downloaded for a one-time fee of Dh7. The creators will revise the payment model, bumping up the cost of each destination to about Dh18 in the new version.
The app currently offers two components: the walking tours and basic trip-planning information. Selecting a monument will unlock audio and HD-video capsules, a site map, timeline, history and trivia.
The app brings together various internet sources, which can be accessed even if you’re struggling with the network in a foreign country. The trivia section is compelling for young travellers. For example, under Petra, users will find titbits about the shooting of Transformers and Indiana Jones.
When I tried the app, the audio and video features of some monuments, including the Tower of London and the Fountains of Bellagio, took time to load. When they did, there was a clear explanation of the significance and a brief history of the destination. The app can be used as a personal journal. Users can record their experience, take photos, upload them on social media and post reviews. Information such as the weather, operation hours and ticket prices, can be viewed, too.
This is a handy app for concise information during the pre-planning phase of a trip. However, the abridged tour guide, with a two-minute audio introduction and virtual videos, can’t replace the range of topics a human tour guide can cover. Not yet, anyway.

Mazen Abukhater, principal and actuary at global consultancy Mercer, Middle East, says the company’s Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index - which benchmarks 34 pension schemes across the globe to assess their adequacy, sustainability and integrity - included Saudi Arabia for the first time this year to offer a glimpse into the region.
The index highlighted fundamental issues for all 34 countries, such as a rapid ageing population and a low growth / low interest environment putting pressure on expected returns. It also highlighted the increasing popularity around the world of defined contribution schemes.
“Average life expectancy has been increasing by about three years every 10 years. Someone born in 1947 is expected to live until 85 whereas someone born in 2007 is expected to live to 103,” Mr Abukhater told the Mena Pensions Conference.
“Are our systems equipped to handle these kind of life expectancies in the future? If so many people retire at 60, they are going to be in retirement for 43 years – so we need to adapt our retirement age to our changing life expectancy.”
Saudi Arabia came in the middle of Mercer’s ranking with a score of 58.9. The report said the country's index could be raised by improving the minimum level of support for the poorest aged individuals and increasing the labour force participation rate at older ages as life expectancies rise.
Mr Abukhater said the challenges of an ageing population, increased life expectancy and some individuals relying solely on their government for financial support in their retirement years will put the system under strain.
“To relieve that pressure, governments need to consider whether it is time to switch to a defined contribution scheme so that individuals can supplement their own future with the help of government support,” he said.

The Energy Research Centre
Founded 50 years ago as a nuclear research institute, scientists at the centre believed nuclear would be the “solution for everything”.
Although they still do, they discovered in 1955 that the Netherlands had a lot of natural gas. “We still had the idea that, by 2000, it would all be nuclear,” said Harm Jeeninga, director of business and programme development at the centre.
"In the 1990s, we found out about global warming so we focused on energy savings and tackling the greenhouse gas effect.”
The energy centre’s research focuses on biomass, energy efficiency, the environment, wind and solar, as well as energy engineering and socio-economic research.
