Learn to shake a leg, contemporary style.

"Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance." If Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, Dave Barry, has that advice to give, I say take it! Retraining my brain to send the right signals to my two left feet, I plan to take up some contemporary dance classes at the James & Alex Dance Studios in September. The dance form is one that borrows from several genres like modern, jazz, classical ballet and lyrical and works to improving flexibility and fluidity. It allows to break conventional rules of classical routines, focusing on floorwork performed to a variety of music.

The dance studio based in Dubai Media City will begin its autumn term for contemporary dance on September 8. A seven week course will involve lessons in technique and creative skills at the beginners, intermediate and advance levels. Teachers will shake up lessons every term, providing new material to perform and making it easy to join anytime throughout the year.

Contemporary dance drop-in classes will be held every Tuesday for beginners and every Thursday for those in the intermediate level.

The seven week course starts from Dh490 for 60 minute sessions and Dh665 for 90 minute sessions. Drop in classes are at Dh65 for each session. Packages for drop in classes start at Dh720 for 12 sessions.
