Bollywood actress Chitrangada Singh is always on the move. After making her debut in 2003 in Sudhir Mishra's film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, she went on to star in other critically-acclaimed films, Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011) and Inkaar (2013). The actress – who made waves for her scintillating performance in Aao Raja, a musical number in last year's Gabbar Is Back starring Akshay Kumar – was in Dubai recently to perform at a special New Year's Eve event at The Country Club at Al Mamzar park. We spoke with the model-turned-actress about her latest projects and upcoming performances.
Tell us about the projects you have in store for us this year.
There is a film called Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, which we have already started shooting but couldn't finish [last year]. It's a thriller/drama sort of film. It's quite edgy. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays a contract killer in it. It's one of the favourite scripts that I have read in a long time, so I am very happy to be part of this project. Then there is another one called Band of Maharajahs, in which I am playing a Pakistani singer.
You made your debut in 2003 in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. You also starred in other acclaimed films such as Yeh Saali Zindagi and Inkaar, bringing attention to yourself as an actress of substance. And then we see you dancing in the raunchy item number Aao Raja. How did you get involved in that?
It was something that just happened. Basically, Mr [Sanjay Leela] Bhansali [the film’s producer] was looking for someone who has done dancing before but is not a predictable choice. He said he wanted somebody kind of sultry but not in an obvious way. So that’s how the opportunity came to me. I don’t think I would ever say no to something that he offers me. And to be very honest, I really like the song too. There are no plans of doing any other item songs at the moment, but if something interesting comes up, I might consider it.
You come to Dubai quite often. What do you like doing when you’re here?
Yes, I do come quite often. I was here at the beginning of December for guest appearance at a club night, and then for New Year’s Eve. I might be coming again in February for another project but that is not confirmed right now. I love going shopping when I’m here, especially at The Dubai Mall.
Have you performed in the UAE before, and if so, how do you like performing here?
Yes I have. It was the Masala Awards, I think about a year back. It was great. Because there are so many Indians here, and also a lot of non-Indians who follow Indian cinema. It is always great to perform here.
