Home improvements: Upgrade unused spaces

Entrances and hallways immediately set the tone for the rest of the house, and define its character. Colour is vital in creating an energetic atmosphere as soon as you enter. I often paint banisters in bright colours, and use eye-catching runners and statement artwork to create talking points and ensure all guests find something they can relate to.

Another tip is to place sculptures in unexpected places, such as entrances and hallways, to add a fun and quirky design element.

You can also turn narrow connecting spaces into warm, cosy rooms. People tend to avoid putting furniture in narrow connecting areas, fearing it will make the space appear smaller. It’s important to embrace the size of the room. A small room should be made to feel as cosy as possible. I often use oversized chairs or sofas, which look very inviting. Add floor-length curtains in a bold design for an extra layer of warmth in a small room. Once drawn, the space becomes a peaceful place hidden away in a busy family home.
