Home improvements: Organise kitchen safely and efficiently

While your kitchen can be a haven for delicious creations, it can also be a danger zone if not organised efficiently. There is a whole manner of threats to avoid, from sharp blades to open flames and the odd un-detected piece of broken glass.

Ensure your heavier and more fragile items have a designated spot on your shelves – precariously stacking them on top of each other is a recipe for disaster. The last thing you need is a pressure cooker falling out off the cupboard and onto your head.

Next, look to your knives. If you have a tendency to rifle through your drawer looking for the right chopping utensils, it’s time to find safer storage alternatives. Luckily, this is easily done.

Grab a large glass jar (or something that is deep enough to hold your largest knife) and fill it with a few packs of bamboo skewers. Again, the size of the skewers will depend on the size of the largest knife. Slip each knife (blade down) into the bamboo and, just like that, you’ve created a safer space for cooking.

If you’re looking to spruce the jar up a bit or even match it to your kitchen’s current decor, you can cover it with paint, wallpaper or anything else that comes to mind.
