Nothing says childhood reminiscence quite like sidewalk chalk.
Between those endless hours of hopscotch and hundreds of BFF’s scrawled across your parents’ driveway in vibrant pinks, blues and yellows, you could easily have spent hours creating works of art.
Your children can enjoy the same fun as you did, with an added bonus: you can spend time creating the chalk together.
All you’ll need is plaster of Paris, water, powdered tempera paint in various colours, mixing bowls and moulds. You’ll be able to find moulds at any arts and crafts store or you can opt for either fun ice cube trays or a cheaper alternative: toilet paper rolls. Just make sure that you line the latter with wax paper and cover with tape at the bottom.
You’ll need one cup of plaster of Paris for every three quarters of a cup of water. Add as much powdered tempera as you like and stir away. Pour the mixture into your moulds and allow to sit for at least 12 hours at room temperature.
As for cleaning up, don’t pour any extra contents down your kitchen sink – what you see happening to the chalk in your moulds can also happen in your pipes.
