Home improvements: Making stilts out of tin cans

You’d be surprised at the number of everyday items that can be repurposed, rather than being sent to landfill. For example, the next time you’re about to throw out large tin cans, consider saving them and making tin-can stilts with your children. It’s easy and lots of fun.

You’ll need a few items. Two large aluminium cans (per person), a drill, thick vinyl rope and decorative elements (these can be anything from sparkles to coloured tissue paper). First, make sure no sharp edges remain. Flip the can upside down to the closed end, and drill a hole on opposite sides. This is where the vinyl will eventually be tied.

Next, take your decorations and apply to the cans – this is a great way for the children to personalise their project.

Finally, tie each side of the vinyl rope to the can, using a double knot to secure it. Give the stilts a try by placing each foot between the vinyl string and the top of each can, and pulling the string up to secure the can to your feet, then try taking a walk. Note: you might need to alter the length of the rope if there’s too much slack when pulled up.
