A simple pie tin can be transformed into a pretty lantern in a few easy steps. You and your children can make a fanoos to mark the final days of Ramadan or a decorative feature that can be used in the garden once the weather starts to cool.
All you need is a pie tin (the malleable versions that you can pick up in any supermarket), a push pin, sticky tape and a battery-operated candle.
Start by choosing a design; if you’re opting for a Ramadan theme, why not try the outline of a mosque or a moon shape? Floral and star shapes will also work nicely, but keep things simple.
Sketch the outline of your design on a piece of paper, then place the paper onto the inside of your pie tie (securing with sticky tape). Using your pin, pierce holes through your paper and the tin, following the outline of your sketch. Make sure that your holes are spaced evenly.
Next, tape your battery-operated candle to the inside of the pie tin – when it’s turned on, the light will filter through the holes, creating a pretty pattern. Just make sure to place your new lantern up against a wall or another flat surface, so that the back is closed off and the light filters through.
