Home improvements: Alternative ways to use clear nail polish

Your innocuous little bottle of clear nail polish could help you out in a number of household-related jams.

Is the wood on any of your furniture splintering? Prevent your clothes getting snagged (or even ripped) by dabbing some clear nail polish on the offending area.

If you ever get green rings on your fingers from wearing certain pieces of costume jewellery, nail polish could be your greatest ally. Coat the inside of your rings with a layer of polish to prevent it from tarnishing and leaving any unsightly marks. You can also keep your sunglasses in shape by dabbing some polish over the screws.

Use polish to prevent ink running on labels. This could be anything from homemade labels to instructions on the back of medicine bottles. If there’s any chance of smudging, dab some clear nail polish over it for protection.

Clear nail polish can also be called on to seal envelopes (assuming that you send anything in the post anymore); and to prevent buttons from becoming loose – just dab some clear nail polish on the top thread to secure. Similarly, if you have trouble threading a needle, dab your piece of thread into some nail polish before you start and it should sail through.
