Hiam Abbass on comedy
On Thursday night's gala opening at Emirates Palace, the Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass said her comedy film Peace After Marriage, which is screening at the festival, is a departure from her usual roles. "I haven't done a lot of comedies in my life - I have done so many tragic parts in the past. I have done other films since this one, but with this film we had to wait a long time because the budget is so low. It concerns Arabs living in the States."

Italian films at ADFF
Eight Italian films will screen at ADFF, which runs until November 2. Among them is Gianfranco Rosi's documentary Sacro GRA, about life along Rome's ring road. It won the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival. Giorgio Starace, Italy's ambassador to the UAE, said he is looking forward to Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West. "I am a great admirer of Leone's cinematography," Starace said. Other films showing include Francesco Conversano's Walls and Salvo by Fabio Grassadonia.
