Fashion notes: Switch up your colour combos

Red and pink has been touted as the unexpected colour combination of the season. At first instinct, you may view it to be a sickly pairing, saved only for Valentine's Day enthusiasts. But then you see a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker in a pair of flared hot-pink trousers and a ruffled pink blouse, and you think: "That looks fabulous."

The look can be replicated in three different ways. The first is to follow in the footsteps of Parker and opt for two separates, one in pink and one in red, and wear them together. This could mean trousers and a blouse, a skirt and T-shirt or a coat and dress. The second way is to find a garment, such as a dress or jumpsuit, that features both shades together – either in a geometric or floral print or in a colour-blocked manner. The third approach to this look would be to simply opt for an accessory – such as a bag or pair of shoes (as shown in the photo above) in the second colour.

It’s certainly a bewildering colour combination for more classically minded fashion followers, who are wary of wearing two strong hues together in one look. But there are upsides – it’s a style that conveys confidence, open-mindedness and overall girl-boss attitude.

Pink and red isn’t the only colour-blocked duo currently on-trend. Royal blue with teal and purple with coral are other examples of unexpected colour combinations. And you will find loads of others in stores as well – a light-blue blouse with an orange peplum-style hem at Riva caught my eye recently, and I was tempted to try it on.

Some claim that green and yellow is a stylish colour duo for the season, though it’s one I personally despise. Pale blue and pastel pink on the other hand, is a combination that I will gladly embrace.
