Popular Emirati social commentator Khalid Al Ameri is set to get behind the wheel of a taxi run by Careem, the app based chauffeur driven car booking service in Dubai.
"I'm becoming a @CareemDXB () driver tomorrow! Here's why I'm doing it and how you can be part of the experience. #UAE", Ameri tweeted to his 17,400 followers on Twitter.
Ameri says he got inspired after interviewing a Careem taxi driver recently and decided to take on the job.
“He told me about all his hopes and dreams, it was truly inspirational,” Ameri says on his various social media platforms.
The taxi service reached out to Ameri to become a Careem Captain (their driver) for a day.
“Why am I doing this? Well if you know me, I believe in the power of stories, and that sharing those stories is beautiful and can connect us as human beings.”
Ameri will be followed by a camera crew, who will broadcast the experience as he picks up passengers from around the city and the conversations he strikes up with them.
This is not the first time Ameri has proposed a selfless act to change perceptions about certain professions.
In January, the 31-year-old Master of Business Administration graduate of Stanford University in the US, wrote an open letter to the Abu Dhabi Education Council with the intention of taking unpaid leave from his government job to become a teacher.
The decision was prompted by the lack of male Emirati teachers in government schools, who shun the profession because of the low pay scales in comparison to other government jobs.
