Middle Eastern hip-hop is stagnating, according to Don Bigg.
Speaking from the Mawazine Festival, the Moroccan rapper Don Bigg – a household name in his country – says that unless there is some serious financial investment, the genre would not reach its potential.
“Record labels and most of the media here still have a problem with the genre,” he said. “They don’t understand it, let alone market it.”
Bigg took matters into his own hands by building his own professional studio in his home city of Casablanca.
It will be the location where he will record his third album to be released towards the end of this year. “It is a risk,” he said. “But I believe in it and I hope it will pay off."
Bigg is considered a pioneer in Moroccan rap, his gruff and forceful style gaining him a following across Morocco and France.
His lyrics focus on the plight of Moroccan youth.
