The first professional and student showcase by Contemporary Dance Dubai, to be held 3 May at Ducac Mall of the Emirates has sold out. We talk to its founder Krista Degaetano, about the show and how contemporary dance is now hugely in demand. During the show, the audience will be taken along a visual journey through the various styles, sounds and techniques of Contemporary Dance, by the 45 performers taking part.
“This is a groundbreaking event,” says Degaetano, “There are so many common styles like tango and salsa already, but contemporary is the next popular thing in the region.”
The performance includes an array of contemporary styles such as lyrical, traditional, and dramatic to dub-step and classical music pieces.
The dance school itself was first formed three years ago in Dubai, starting with just two students. Degaetano now caters to more than 120 students and interest is continuing to grow fast with beginners to advanced.
“I feel very proud and honoured. When I first came here everybody fought me because they thought it was not the right market [for contemporary dance] telling me that it was just a place for business,” she says. “I started with just 2 students. Now they are all growing and learning and it gives me huge satisfaction and pride to know we are making a difference to people lives by expressing themselves through art.”
