Coldplay top British album charts

Coldplay's new album Ghost Stories went straight to the top of the British music charts on Sunday, becoming the fastest-selling album of the year. It is the group's sixth studio album and sixth successive British No 1 album. Coldplay knocked last week's chart-topper, Xscape, a collection of previously unreleased songs by Michael Jackson. In the singles chart, Stay With Me, a new track by the English singer-songwriter Sam Smith, debuted at No 1, unseating Waves by the Dutch artist Mr Probz. – Reuters

Heropanti earns more than Dh8m in two days

Tiger Shroff, the son of Bollywood's once reigning star Jackie Shroff, seems to already have a fan following in India. His debut film Heropanti, which hit cinemas on May 22, collected more than Dh8 million in two days. Directed by Sabbir Khan, the movie opened alongside Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan, which features Jackie. Presented by UTV Motion Pictures and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt Ltd, and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the movie also launched the New Delhi actress Kriti Sanon. – IANS

Japanese pop group AKB48 attacked

Two members of the all-female Japanese pop group AKB48 and one staffer have been injured by a saw-wielding man at a fan event on Sunday. Anna Iriyama, 18, and Rina Kawaei, 19, were cut on their hands and head. A male staff member also was cut on the hand. They were taken to hospital for treatment. Police arrested the attacker, a 24-year-old unemployed man. The incident happened in Takizawa city in northeastern Japan. AKB48 are a wildly popular song and dance troupe. – AP

World Cup song fails to strike right tone

Since the recent release of Fifa's We Are One (Ole Ola), hordes of fans in Brazil have been slamming the official 2014 World Cup theme. Many expressed their frustration on Twitter under the hash tag "VoltaWakaWaka" – a plea for the return of the beloved song that Shakira performed in 2010's South Africa tournament. Although the Brazilian Cláudia Leitte is also featured in the official theme, critics say they don't understand why the American acts Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez were chosen for the song when there are so many other great musicians in the land of bossa nova. They also complain that the song is mostly in English and Spanish, leaving only a few seconds at the end for Leitte to sing in her native Portuguese. – AP

Emma Watson graduates

The British actress Emma Watson was among 2,000 graduates who received a degree on Sunday from Brown University. She tweeted a photo of herself in cap and gown. Watson graduated with a bachelor's degree in English literature from the Ivy League university in Rhode Island. The 24-year-old started at Brown in 2009, the same year she was named the highest-grossing actress of the decade by the Guinness Book of World Records. – AP
