If ever there were a more astute reminder of the tired cliché that “it’s not showshow, it’s show business,” the Cannes Film Festival is perhaps it.
The glamour and the celebs is clearly the biggest media draw, but behind the scenes it’s clear that this is a business event that stands right up there with the most turgid speech by any disgraced-banker-turned-lifestyle- coach.
Somewhat randomly, delayed flights having led to me missing both the Mad Max premiere, and the press conference for Yorgos Lanthimos' hotly tipped The Lobster (I caught the film itself later, and would say a crustacean of two halves. One very good, the second less so), I decided to spend an afternoon taking in the Village International, where essentially around 200 countries seemed to be fighting for who could give the best tax credits/rebates to attract film production to their countries.
I moved to the Marche de Film, where again money was the object.
Meanwhile, unbelievable crowds gathered around the extremely obtrusive crowd barriers, which seem to move each time you’ve worked out how to get back to your hotel, leading to finding another couple of backstreets in what is, tho be fair, a delightful small city (or possibly town, realistically.)
At some point during this, an email came in to verify that my interview with Colin Farrell had been confirmed. There was a catch though. It seems Cannes is the first festival I have attended where the press is expected to pay for the privilege of promoting new films. Here's The Lobster's tariff:
Yorgos Lanthimos (director)
€600 (Dh2510) per round table interview (print/radio)
€800 per TV interview
Colin Farrell (lead actor)
€1,000 per round table interview (print/radio)
€1,400 per TV interview
Rachel Weisz (lead actress)
€1,000 per round table interview (print/radio)
€1,400 per TV interview
Ben Whishaw and John C Reilly (supporting actor)
€600 per round table interview (print/radio)
€800 per TV interview
I really hope DIFF doesn’t go this way, or I’ll get a week off every December.
