Bonnie Tyler to compete at Eurovision

Britain has chosen the Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler as the representative to the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden, on May 18. The 61-year-old Tyler's 1980s hits include Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero. Tyler said she is "honoured and delighted" to represent her country with the song Believe in Me. Britain has not won since 1997. Last year's UK entrant, the septuagenarian singer Engelbert Humperdinck, came second-last. – AP

2. Black Sabbath guitarist pens Armenia song

More Eurovision news: the guitarist of the British rock band Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, has composed the music for Armenia's entry to the continent-wide contest. The English rock ballad Lonely Planet will be performed by the Armenian rock singer Gor Sujyan. Iommi has been involved in charitable activities in Armenia since 1988. Armenia withdrew from last year's Eurovision contest in neighbouring Azerbaijan, citing security concerns. It has been relatively successful in the contest, coming fourth in 2008. – AFP

3. Bieber cancels Portugal concert

Justin Bieber has cancelled one of two scheduled concerts in Portugal next week, just after completing a rough week in London. The 19-year-old pop sensation angered some of his fans for being late on stage, then suffered a health scare and was involved in a foul-mouthed confrontation with a photographer. The concert's promoters said that Bieber cancelled his Lisbon concert on Tuesday "due to unforeseen circumstances", but insisted the teen idol was still keen to perform on Monday. – AFP

4. Danny Boyle previews new film

Danny Boyle gave the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival a preview of his new dark thriller on Saturday. Trance, which opens on March 27 in Europe, stars James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel in a tale that blends the world of fine art with criminal gangs and hypnotherapy. The Slumdog Millionaire director said of the film's plot: "At first you're absolutely certain you should root for James McAvoy. But then it kind of shifts – and that's one of the appeals of the film." – AP

5. Shields may turn TV host

After the hosts Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselback announced they are leaving the American daytime talk show The View, the rumour is Brooke Shields is stepping in as a replacement. The website Showbiz411 reported: “Sources say Barbara Walters really wants her. The deal isn’t done yet,” but it’s close to being signed.
