After 58 years, Bombay Talkies is back.
The studio, founded in Mumbai in 1934 by Himanshu Rai, Rajnarayan Dube and Devika Rani, launched some of Bollywood's legendary stars, including Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, Dev Anand and Mehmood. Bombay Talkies went into decline after a rift between its founding members over mounting production costs. It was shut down in 1954.
The film Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahen is the studio's first new production and marks the acting debut of Dube's grandson Abhay Kumar, who is behind the revival of the historic banner. Nasirr Khan, the son of the late actor and comic Johnny Walker, will direct the film.
In an interview with The Times of India, Kumar said: "Believe me, fans, well-wishers and the movie connoisseurs from across the country and the globe, wrote in, making a repeated request for the studio's comeback." He added that Bombay Talkies was the "most innovative and highly resourced studio of its time" and also was the first production house to pioneer a full-fledged studio catering to post-production under one roof.
