An evening filled with light, music and art at Artscape

  • English
  • Arabic

Head out to Saadiyat Island tomorrow for an evening of light and music inspired by the artworks from Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s first major exhibition.

Hosted by Tourism & Culture Authority Abu Dhabi, Artscape is a free-to-attend interactive event promoting the Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection currently on display at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

The Egyptian artist Hassan Khan, whose artwork Dom Tak Tak Dom Tak features in the collection, is one of the major musical acts of the evening. His piece is titled Taraban and the starting point for his set is two early 20th-century Egyptian songs by Youssef El Manialawy. Khan has worked with classical Arabian musicians playing the oud, qanoun, violin and riqq, and singers to create melodic patterns developed from the modes and transitions used in the original songs. Dom Tak Tak Dom Tak is also music-based – it amplifies Shaabi music set to a light sequence.

The New York-based multidisciplinary artist Fatima Al Qadiri will perform songs from her debut album Asiatisch. The album is recorded in a genre of music called sinogrime, so named because of its preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies. Local DJ Shadi Megallaa will be playing a set titled Reflections of Light, composed of elements and sounds derived from nature.

Sara Al Mazrouei and Isra Al Saabri will conduct a light photography workshop and there will be a host of other activities for audiences of all ages.

Maitha Al Mazrooei, the public engagement programmer at TCA Abu Dhabi, says: "This special event provides audiences with a chance to explore another dimension of Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection exhibition and engage directly with artists, designers and performers from around the world. The collaborative workshops and the extended music performances, unique to this Artscape, are no doubt a formula for an inspiring evening for visitors of all ages."

Artscape: An Evening of Light and Music is on Thursday from 6pm until midnight; workshops run from 6 to 10pm. Entry is free. Visit www.saadiyatculturaldistrict.ae for more information
