As the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix rolls into town, the party people get ready to come out and play. Here’s our pick of the best post-race parties in town.

Mad on Yas Island
Why Serious clubbers looking for A-list live acts.
Arguably the best purpose-built party spot on Yas Island – in the former home of O1ne – Mad Yas Island is the place for Urban music fans and to check some of the Beats on The Beach acts in more intimate surroundings. Rapper T-Pain will open things up on Thursday. The following night Sean Paul and Rita Ora will make appearances. Saturday will mark the arrival of Travis Scott, and US hip-hop star Future will be the race day headliner on Sunday night.
Mad Yas Island opens nightly at 11pm. For reservations, call 055 834 6262 or email reservations@madonyasisland.com

Amber Lounge
Why Blowing the budget to rub shoulders with the rich and famous.
Regarded as the most exclusive F1 party in town, Amber Lounge is this year shifting up a gear to host two glitzy nights at the nearby Yas Links Golf Club. R&B star Jay Sean will be on the mic on both Saturday and Sunday. However, he is unlikely to be the most famous face at Amber Lounge, which is the renowned hangout for true VIPs – last year 20 F1 drivers and a smattering of celebrities were clocked at Sunday night’s closing, post-race party. You can join them, but it comes at a price.
Basic entry passes are US$825 (D3,030) for Saturday and $1,000 on Sunday, while tables go for between $6,600 and $23,600 – and beyond (ask them about the unpriced “ultimate package”). For reservations, email abudhabi@amber-lounge.com or call 055 291 4013

VIP Room
Why Party people who want to grab a celebrity selfie.
Paris-born clubbing brand VIP Room is back in town. This year it will host three parties at Yas Island venue Cipriani, with Drake and Paris Hilton among the headline performers.
Rap superstar Drake will be at the venue for two nights, appearing on the mic for a club set on Saturday before playing official party host for the race-day party on Sunday.
Hilton will be behind the decks for Friday’s opening night, in-between sets from Ibiza legend Luciano (and his “friends”).
Hip-hop artist Gallet – better known as “Rihanna’s Brother” – will also play host at VIP Room on the Saturday and Sunday evenings, the latter being the same evening his sister entertains a rather larger audience at du Arena. More celebrity guests are promised, and resident DJs Mel Debarge, DJ Spade, 4korners and Chris Nati will also be on rotation over the three days.
The parties run from 11pm-3am nightly. Entry is guaranteed to everyone with a table reservation – otherwise you can try your luck at the door. For reservations, call 052 881 8888 or email bookings@viproom-dubai.com

Podium Lounge
Why A more accessible way to soak up a whiff of post-race buzz.
Fresh from events in Monaco, Melbourne and Singapore, the other regular F1 party brand is also back for another go around, offering a more entry-level grand-prix experience.
It will take over Yas Viceroy’s Rush Inn, with music from regional stalwart MadJam, plus Erok, Miles Slater, Patrick Oliver, Skinny Loop and Tim Kay.
Friday to Sunday, 10pm-4am, admission is Dh200 for men while ladies get in free. For more details, visit www.podiumlounge.com

Mobilee Records
Why Edgy left-field sounds.
In a welcome left-turn into edgier clubbing, hip Berlin dance music imprint Mobilee Records will host a pre-race party on Thursday, at Yas Viceroy’s Skylite Rooftop Lounge. Behind the decks for the event, part of the brand’s ongoing Mobilee Records Rooftop World Tour 2016, will be French headliner Agoria, alongside Mobilee Records founders Anja Schneider and Ralf Kollmann.
Early-bird tickets start from Dh499, with VIP packages available. For more details, visit www.abu-dhabi.platinumlist.net
How The Debt Panel's advice helped readers in 2019
December 11: 'My husband died, so what happens to the Dh240,000 he owes in the UAE?'
JL, a housewife from India, wrote to us about her husband, who died earlier this month. He left behind an outstanding loan of Dh240,000 and she was hoping to pay it off with an insurance policy he had taken out. She also wanted to recover some of her husband’s end-of-service liabilities to help support her and her son.
“I have no words to thank you for helping me out,” she wrote to The Debt Panel after receiving the panellists' comments. “The advice has given me an idea of the present status of the loan and how to take it up further. I will draft a letter and send it to the email ID on the bank’s website along with the death certificate. I hope and pray to find a way out of this.”
November 26: ‘I owe Dh100,000 because my employer has not paid me for a year’
SL, a financial services employee from India, left the UAE in June after quitting his job because his employer had not paid him since November 2018. He owes Dh103,800 on four debts and was told by the panellists he may be able to use the insolvency law to solve his issue.
SL thanked the panellists for their efforts. "Indeed, I have some clarity on the consequence of the case and the next steps to take regarding my situation," he says. "Hopefully, I will be able to provide a positive testimony soon."
October 15: 'I lost my job and left the UAE owing Dh71,000. Can I return?'
MS, an energy sector employee from South Africa, left the UAE in August after losing his Dh12,000 job. He was struggling to meet the repayments while securing a new position in the UAE and feared he would be detained if he returned. He has now secured a new job and will return to the Emirates this month.
“The insolvency law is indeed a relief to hear,” he says. "I will not apply for insolvency at this stage. I have been able to pay something towards my loan and credit card. As it stands, I only have a one-month deficit, which I will be able to recover by the end of December."

The struggle is on for active managers
David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.
The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.
Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.
Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.
Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.
At the start of the year, Greenlight managed $6.3 billion in assets, according to a regulatory filing. By May, the firm was down to $5.5bn.
Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.
Key figures in the life of the fort
Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa (ruled 1761-1793) Built Qasr Al Hosn as a watchtower to guard over the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island.
Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.
Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.
Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.
Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.
Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (ruled 1966-2004) Moved the royal residence to Al Manhal palace and kept his diwan at Qasr Al Hosn.
