The Grammy-winning R&B singer Estelle returns to Abu Dhabi to perform on Saturday and Sunday as part of the F1 celebrations at Amber Lounge.
We have seen you in the UAE performing club shows and supporting big acts at the du Forum. How does tonight’s Amber Lounge show stack up against those?
This is a special moment for me because I am here for the F1 and that is one of the biggest events in the world. Just to be in the house and perform at one of the most renowned F1 nights is great. We are going to have fun like we normally do. People know my shows are not about standing still. I want to see them singing, dancing, getting involved.
You have had an eclectic array of hits. Are you creatively restless?
I don’t like being bored. That has always been my way of approaching whatever I do. I don’t like making music that sounds one particular way. I just want to do what makes me happy and feels right.
Does that work against you, as it may take longer to build a dedicated fan base?
Not at all. I started as a rapper so some people say to me: “So now you just sing and don’t rap no more?” But those who know me understand that I basically do what I want and I want to have a career where I can be here for the next 50 years – so if that means singing with a bit of rap thrown, then so be it.
Your fourth album, True Romance, is out next year. How would you describe it?
It is grown-up, more gritty and more real. I have never been one to sing “baby, sweetheart, darling” kind of records. I like doing classy, refined and womanly records, but at the same time saying some of the realest things ever on the song.
Finally, for those who can’t make it tonight, will you come back for a proper tour soon?
Definitely. Next year I am doing a tour of Europe and I will try to swing by as part of it. If not, then I will come here to do something special.
