It is December 1971, and the wheels of change are turning. On December 2 that month, all roads led to Dubai as the UAE flag was hoisted for the first time at Union House.
This photo shows the current Ruler of Fujairah, Sheikh Hamad Al Sharqi in his striking 1968 Pontiac. Sheikh Hamad was then the Crown Prince of Fujairah.
The American-made sports car was bought in 1968, and his expression tells us everything we need to know about what it was like to drive.
This picture, meanwhile, was taken by the late Horst Faas. As a photographer for Associated Press, he became known for his arresting images of the Vietnam War. Faas toured the country around this time shooting street scenes, buildings and people.
