Hip-hop stars Migos coming to Abu Dhabi

Migos, one of hip-hop’s biggest groups is coming to Abu Dhabi as part of the Rallycross of Abu Dhabi racing event.

The Atlanta trio will perform the after race concert on April 5 at Yas Island’s du Arena and will cap off a family friendly day of racing action.

In a similar case to the Abu Dhabi F1 after-race concerts, only those who purchased a ticket to the Rally Cross of Abu Dhabi – held from April 4 to 6 at the Yas Marina Circuit – can gain entry to Migos’s performance.

That said, to ensure the younger fans can see the show without breaking the family budget, organisers have launched a Kids Go Free campaign, meaning up to four children under the age of 12 can get free entry to the race and show with every adult ticket purchase.

Why is this a big deal?

Because with the exception of Drake, the Migos is arguably one of the genre’s biggest stars. With all three members – Quavo, Offset and Takeoff – also finding success as solo artists, the Migos can now be considered a hip-hop super-group.

Courtesy their two blockbuster debut albums 2018's Culture and last year's Culture II, the group's played a major part in taking the trap-music – with its minimal beats and subdued keyboards – from clubs to arenas with the hits Bad and Boujee, Motorsport and T-Shirt.

Another reason why this show is worth noting is that a full hip-hop concert in the UAE is increasingly becoming a rarity.

This is down to the growing number of clubs snapping up rappers to perform 20-minute sets at 2am and artists responding to that demand. The Migos concert will be a full show and a chance to appreciate the genre in the large stage that it deserves.

How do I get tickets?

The Rallycross of Abu Dhabi runs on April 4 to 6 at Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island. Weekend tickets begin at Dh395 from www.yasmarinacircuit.com

Stormy seas

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.

We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.
