The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Baftas) revealed its 2019 list of nominees and it includes Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. She continues to make history, as her film Capernaum has been nominated for an award yet again. Labaki has the distinction of being the first Arab female filmmaker to have her film in contention.
The film was also nominated for the Golden Globes' Best Picture — Foreign Language category but lost to Alfonso Cuarón's Roma. It is also shortlisted for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Capernaum is Labaki's third film and tells the story of children in the slums of Beirut, using a cast of non-actors. The main storyline follows a 12-year-old boy who decides to sue his abusive parents, who he's already fled from, for the "crime" of giving him life.
Other films nominated in the same category include Cuaron's Roma, Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War, Matteo Garrone's Dogman and Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters.
Other nominees
Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite leads with 12 nominations, the only film nominated for both the Best Film and Outstanding British Film categories.
Rami Malek, who took home the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, is nominated again for Leading Actor, in a category that includes Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Steve Coogan and Viggo Mortensen.
Lady Gaga is also nominated for Leading Actress alongside Glenn Close, Melissa McCarthy, Olivia Colman and Viola Davis.
The Best Director category is once again dominated by male nominees Spike Lee, Pawlikowski, Cuaron, Lanthimos and Cooper.
