It's a case of better late than never for Chicken Run fans, as the follow-up to the beloved animated film has been confirmed.

Twenty years after Ginger and Rocky busted out of the farm, the poultry gang are back for a new adventure.

And this time, you can catch all the shenanigans from the comfort of your own home, with Netflix signing on to produce the film alongside its original creators Aardman Animations.

Production is due to commence in 2021.

The streaming giant got fans clucking when it announced the news on social media on Tuesday, June 23.

“POULTRY NEWS: Exactly 20 years to the day since the original was released, we can confirm there will be a Chicken Run sequel coming to Netflix,” the statement said.

And if only to fuel fans’ anticipation further, the synopsis has also been released. It seems Ginger and Rocky’s idyllic existence will be disturbed after being called upon, once again, to protect “chickenkind” from a grave new threat.

While there is no word yet of whether actors Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson will reprise their voice roles as Ginger and Rocky respectively, scriptwriter Karey Kirkpatrick is back on board to pen the new tale.

"Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of Chicken Run, so we're delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we've found the perfect story," Aardman Animations co-founder Peter Lord said.

“Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project, too: they celebrate the filmmaker, which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience.”

While the news is exciting, fans would be wise to not count their chickens too early. The stop-motion animation style used in Chicken Run is a notoriously laborious process, so we don't know when we'll be able to see the film.

One of the 84 minutes that make up the original movie took a whopping seven days of filming to complete.
