Awards season 2025 has officially kicked off, with the 82nd annual Golden Globes giving its top honours to The Brutalist and Emilia Perez.
The Brutalist, by director Brady Corbet, took home Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor – Drama for Adrian Brody.
Emilia Perez, meanwhile, won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Original Song, with Zoe Saldana taking home the supporting actress prize.
The two best picture winners are together a sign of a changing film scene, with viewers from across the world engaging far more with challenging and international fare than in years past.
Corbet remarked in his acceptance speech for best picture that the film, which is more than three and a half hours long and features an intermission, was deemed "undistributable" and overcame numerous hurdles in production.
"Films don’t exist without the filmmakers. Please let’s support them – let’s prop them up. No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-century designer on 70mm. But it works," said Corbet.
Emilia Perez, meanwhile, is a Spanish-language French musical, which beat nominees including Wicked, Anora and Challengers to win the top prize in its category.
Numerous non-English language performances also emerged victorious, including Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, who took home the best actress in a drama award, for I'm Still Here. Meanwhile, in the television categories, three Japanese-language performances won for the hit Disney+ series Shogun, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano. Flow, a Latvian fantasy adventure film, won best animated film.
And while the Middle East and India were largely shut out, with Seed of a Sacred Fig, All We Imagine as Light, and Egyptian-American comedian Ramy Youssef going home empty handed, there were clear signs that the spotlight is now shining across the world.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
- Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.

What it means to be a conservationist
Who is Enric Sala?
Enric Sala is an expert on marine conservation and is currently the National Geographic Society's Explorer-in-Residence. His love of the sea started with his childhood in Spain, inspired by the example of the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau. He has been a university professor of Oceanography in the US, as well as working at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Biodiversity and the Bio-Economy. He has dedicated his life to protecting life in the oceans. Enric describes himself as a flexitarian who only eats meat occasionally.
What is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, all life on earth – including in its forests and oceans – forms a “rich tapestry of interconnecting and interdependent forces”. Biodiversity on earth today is the product of four billion years of evolution and consists of many millions of distinct biological species. The term ‘biodiversity’ is relatively new, popularised since the 1980s and coinciding with an understanding of the growing threats to the natural world including habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of biodiversity itself is dangerous because it contributes to clean, consistent water flows, food security, protection from floods and storms and a stable climate. The natural world can be an ally in combating global climate change but to do so it must be protected. Nations are working to achieve this, including setting targets to be reached by 2020 for the protection of the natural state of 17 per cent of the land and 10 per cent of the oceans. However, these are well short of what is needed, according to experts, with half the land needed to be in a natural state to help avert disaster.

ETFs explained
Exhchange traded funds are bought and sold like shares, but operate as index-tracking funds, passively following their chosen indices, such as the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and the FTSE All World, plus a vast range of smaller exchanges and commodities, such as gold, silver, copper sugar, coffee and oil.
ETFs have zero upfront fees and annual charges as low as 0.07 per cent a year, which means you get to keep more of your returns, as actively managed funds can charge as much as 1.5 per cent a year.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five biggest providers BlackRock’s iShares range, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisors SPDR ETFs, Deutsche Bank AWM X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.
