The relationship between memory and creativity is explored in a new exhibition celebrating the work of five distinct artists from across the Arab world.
Whispers of the Past will be hosted at Dubai's Art Couture until the end of August.
The collection brings together pieces from three contemporary artists and two photographers, whose work is linked thematically in the way it explores the relationship between memory and imagination.
The human mind’s relationship with the past is necessarily fractured, with some memories distorted or exaggerated over time, while many are blotted out or forgotten altogether. Whispers of the Past portrays memories – often personal ones – through a variety of different mediums, from portraiture to photography.
Among the artists are Iraqi artist Husain Al Salwan, who uses water colours, acrylics and oils to create emotive portraits of the human face.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Ibrahim Ghazala primarily works with landscapes, while Syrian painter Loai Salahedeen’s work is characterised by bright tones, and a rich use of gold.
Also on display is work from Syrian photographers Adel Rashid and Imad Alaeddin, whose images primarily document camels and other animals, exploring the relationship between the animal and human kingdoms.
Whispers from the Past is open daily from Augus 8 until August 30, 10am to 10pm, free entry, at Art Couture, Al Badia Golf Club, InterContinental Dubai Festival City. Visit www.artcoutureuae.com for more information.
